What exactly is hypnosis?

Forget the image of stage shows or a swinging pendulum: therapeutic hypnosis is neither magical nor mysterious. It is simply a natural state of deep concentration, similar to what we experience when we are completely absorbed in a good book, driving along a familiar route, or just before falling asleep. The body relaxes, attention becomes more focused, and the mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions.

During a session, the person remains conscious and in control at all times. They hear everything, could get up and speak if they wanted to, and generally remember what happened. Hypnosis does not do something to the person — rather, it helps them access their own internal resources to support change.

Two approaches, two different contexts

Hypnotherapy (therapeutic hypnosis)

This is the best-known approach. It aims to support a person through a change, whether emotional, behavioral, or related to a lifestyle habit. It is provided by a practitioner specifically trained in this type of support.

Medical hypnosis

Less well known, but increasingly sought after. It is practiced by healthcare professionals who are members of a professional order. It is important to clarify that medical hypnosis is not a medical procedure in itself: it is a complementary tool that supports the care already being provided by helping to better manage anxiety, stress, pain, and patient comfort during a course of care, while also strengthening their sense of safety and confidence.

What happens during a session?

A session generally takes place gently, in three main stages:

  1. Discussion: We take the time to let the person express themselves and gain a better understanding of their situation, discuss their goals, and answer their questions. There are no surprises. Everything is explained beforehand.
  2. Relaxation and guidance: The person gets comfortable and closes their eyes if they wish. The therapist’s voice helps them gradually relax, somewhat like a more in-depth guided meditation. From there, the therapeutic work begins using different techniques based on the desired outcome.
  3. Return: The person gradually returns to their usual state while retaining the benefits of the relaxation and the suggestions explored during the session.

A guide, not a magician — and an active participant

One essential point to understand: the therapist is a guide, not someone who “controls” another person’s mind. Their role is to guide the person using words, tone of voice, and proven techniques to help them reach a state of relaxation that is conducive to therapeutic work.

The person, for their part, is an active participant in the session, not a passive spectator. Nothing happens without their collaboration: with the support of the guide, they are the one who draws on their own abilities to move toward their goals. You cannot be hypnotized against your will.

Who is it for, and what can it help with?

Therapeutic and medical hypnosis is suitable for people of all ages, from children to older adults, and can be helpful in a wide variety of situations, including:

  • Managing fears and phobias
  • Managing anxiety
  • Pain management
  • Managing insomnia
  • Stopping harmful behaviors (e.g., smoking)
  • Managing addictions (smoking, alcohol, work, etc.)
  • Preparation for childbirth
  • Preparation for surgery
  • Reducing symptoms and side effects of cancer treatments
  • Improving body image (weight loss, eating disorders)
  • Easing trauma-related difficulties
  • Support during grief
  • Managing somatization
  • Certain pediatric cases
  • Developing assertiveness, confidence, and self-esteem
  • Complementary techniques to anesthesia during minor procedures
  • And many other personal or health-related needs

An approach that gets to the root of the problem

Unlike pre-recorded sessions or generic packages, each session is personalized. The approach aims to understand the underlying source of a difficulty rather than simply calming the apparent symptom.
