What is prescribing an X-ray?

Did you know that since May 2020, physiotherapists who hold a certificate issued by the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) can now prescribe X-rays?

Certain conditions apply:

  • The issue must be musculoskeletal in nature.
  • A traumatic event must have occurred (such as a sudden injury from an accident or fall).
  • The trauma must have occurred within the last 72 hours.
  • The physiotherapist must be the first healthcare professional consulted.

How does it work?

Step 1 – Assessment
An in-clinic assessment must first be performed by a physiotherapist to determine whether an X-ray is appropriate and to evaluate any associated risks.

Step 2 – Prescription
If your physiotherapist determines that an X-ray is necessary, they will stop the assessment and provide you with a signed prescription containing all required information. If you have a family doctor, they will be informed that an imaging request has been issued, and the results will also be sent to them.

Step 3 – Service access
You will bring the prescription to a radiology clinic of your choice. X-rays prescribed by a physiotherapist and performed in a radiology center are covered by RAMQ.

Step 4 – Communication of results and follow-up
Regardless of the results, your physiotherapist will contact you by phone once the radiology report is received. This is generally sent within 24 hours after the X-ray is taken.

Negative result: If no fracture is found, you can continue your physiotherapy care and begin rehabilitation as soon as possible.
Positive result: If a fracture or any other incidental finding is discovered, you will be referred to your family doctor or to a physician working within the care pathway established by Kinatex clinic to ensure you receive appropriate care within a reasonable timeframe. The physician will indicate the best time to begin physiotherapy care following your fracture.

Benefits

  • Fast and efficient care pathway
  • Earlier start to rehabilitation
  • Improved interprofessional collaboration between your physiotherapist and your family doctor or a physician working within the service corridor established by the clinic
  • Reduced pressure on emergency departments
