What is psychoeducation?

Psychoeducators are professionals with a graduate-level university degree in psychoeducation. They work with individuals of all ages who are experiencing difficulties adapting to various life situations.

According to the Ordre des psychoéducateurs et psychoéducatrices du Québec, psychoeducators intervene with individuals facing adaptation challenges that are reflected in their behaviour and across different areas of daily life.

Who are psychoeducators?

Psychoeducators are mental health and human development professionals who specialize in understanding behaviour in relation to a person’s environment. Their work focuses on helping individuals regain balance in their daily functioning and improve their ability to adapt to life’s challenges.

They assess situations directly in the person’s natural environments (such as home, school, work, or community settings) in order to better understand their needs and realities.

How can a psychoeducator help?

Psychoeducators support individuals by:

  • Assessing behavioural and adaptation difficulties in real-life environments
  • Identifying strengths, challenges, and contributing factors
  • Developing personalized intervention plans
  • Supporting the development of coping strategies and adaptive skills
  • Promoting emotional regulation, autonomy, and social functioning
  • Collaborating with families and other professionals to ensure coordinated care
  • Intervening with individuals across all ages, from children to older adults

Areas of intervention

Psychoeducators work with individuals experiencing:

  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Emotional or psychological challenges
  • Adaptation difficulties in school, work, or family environments
  • Social integration challenges
  • Stress, anxiety, or emotional regulation difficulties
  • Difficult life transitions or crises
