When Should You Consult a Hand Therapist?

Some pain or injuries may seem minor, but without timely treatment, they can lead to long-term complications.

You should consult if you experience:

  • difficulty in the days following an injury or surgery
  • hand or wrist pain
  • stiffness, reduced mobility, or difficulty bending or straightening fingers
  • numbness or loss of strength
  • finger deformities (mallet finger, boutonnière deformity, swan-neck deformity)
  • pain related to osteoarthritis or tendinitis

Early assessment and treatment can help prevent complications such as joint stiffness, adhesions, loss of function, or chronic pain.

Which Conditions Can Be Treated with Hand Therapy?

Our hand therapy specialists treat a wide range of injuries, whether recent or long-standing. Hand therapy benefits athletes, manual workers, individuals recovering from surgery, and anyone experiencing progressive or persistent pain.

Traumatic Hand & Wrist Injuries

These injuries typically occur after a fall, impact, accident, or sudden movement, and require rapid, precise intervention. They include:

  • fractures
  • sprains
  • dislocations
  • crush injuries to the fingers or hand
  • ligament tears
  • sports injuries
  • and more

Finger Deformities

These conditions often appear impressive, and they require advanced expertise to be corrected:

  • mallet finger
  • boutonnière deformity
  • swan-neck deformity

Common Conditions

Some issues develop gradually, sometimes without a clear injury:

  • osteoarthritis
  • wrist tendinitis
  • trigger finger

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

After hand or wrist surgery, the first few days are critical. Prompt, well-structured rehabilitation helps protect the repair, prevent stiffness, and ensure optimal functional recovery.

Our teams provide:

  • immediate post-surgical follow-up
  • fabrication of complex corrective splints
  • treatment of neuropathic pain
  • application of advanced surgical protocols validated by plastic and orthopedic surgeons

We work closely with surgeons to ensure precise, coordinated follow-up care.

What Happens During a Session?

Each visit begins with a comprehensive assessment to identify the cause of your condition and its impact on daily life. Your therapist will evaluate:

  • wrist, hand, and finger mobility
  • strength and sensation
  • painful movements
  • joint stability
  • the source of pain or dysfunction
  • your daily activities and functional needs

A personalized treatment plan is then developed, which may include:

  • pain and swelling management
  • targeted, progressive exercises
  • custom splint fabrication if needed
  • neuro-proprioceptive taping
  • practical advice to support healing in daily activities

More Information

FAQ :

  1. Is a splint always necessary?
Not always. Your therapist will determine whether it is needed to stabilize, protect, or correct a structure.
  2. Do I need a referral?
    No, except for CNESST/SAAQ cases.
  3. How long does rehabilitation take?
It depends on the injury—ranging from a few weeks to several months.
  4. Which injuries can be treated without surgery?
Stable fractures, sprains, dislocations, sports injuries, osteoarthritis, neuropathies, tendinitis, and certain minor deformities.
  5. What is considered an emergency?

An open wound, a displaced fracture, or a clear tendon injury should be treated as urgent first, followed by hand therapy. Your hand surgeon likely knows our Certified Hand Therapy team and may refer you directly.
