Though we tend to hear about arthritis mostly in reference to the elderly, it should be known that it is a disease that also affects children as well as thousands of individuals in the prime of their lives.

The general term “arthritis” is derived from the Greek “arth”, meaning articulation and “itis”, which also means articulation.

The term arthritis includes a broad spectrum of different afflictions – perhaps even a hundred of them, yet all these illnesses have a common element, which is joint and musculoskeletal pain. The various frequently observed types of arthritis can range from milder forms such as tendinopathy or bursitis all the way up to highly incapacitating afflictions such as rheumatoid arthritis. The greater arthritis category also includes painful syndromes such as fibromyalgia.

Arthrosis is normal wear and tear to joint cartilage. This wear and tear can be premature or further advanced as a result of overuse. Overuse can be brought about by a sport that demands frequent repetitive movement of a particular joint. It can also be caused by incorrect posture, compensation, other mechanical problems, or illness.

The physiotherapist will focus on pain, stiffness and weakness. Using various techniques, the physiotherapist will increase your range of movement and your strength through specific, personalized exercises, and control pain by applying various methods as required.

It is also very important to understand the causes of arthrosis if it is not of systemic origin, which is to say if it is not the result of an illness. By correcting the cause of premature or advanced wear and tear, serious disabilities can be prevented.
