Lifting techniques and back prevention
Improper lifting techniques and work posture are major causes of work
related back injuries. Ninety per-cent of all work-related back injuries
can be associated with improper lifting and carrying techniques.
Lifting is a strenuous activity. It requires proper training and technique.
Here are a few key points and tips to help you reduce your risk of back
injury.
1) Check the object first :
Testing the
object first by pushing it lightly before lifting it will
help you determine the weight. * Remember that
small boxes do not always mean a light load.
2) Is it packed properly :
Verify that the package is packed properly. A
properly balanced package won’t move around.
Loose pieces can shift during transport and cause the load to become unbalanced and
cause accidents.
3) Get a grip :
Always ensure that you
have a proper grip on the object before you
lift it.
4) Get close :
Get as close to the load as
possible. Keeping the object close to your
body puts less strain and force through your
back.
5) Don’t reach :
Don’t reach above the
level of your shoulders for an object. Use a
step ladder or a lift to retrieve the object.
6) Keep your form :
Learn the proper
lifting techniques and posture. Maintaining
proper fitness and health will go a long way
to preventing a back injury at work.
Lifting tips
Always use slow smooth movements, quick jerky
movements increase the strain on your back muscles.
Always face the object and never twist during the lifting
motion. Lift with your legs and keep the load close to
your body.
If you have several objects to carry, pace yourself. Take
breaks and don’t over do it. Fatigue sets in and muscles
become weaker. Don’t rely on back belts to protect you
from back injury as they have not been proven to
prevent injury.
Make sure the floor area is safe from loose objects and
not slippery. Make sure that the area where you will
placing the object is clear.
